If you are both carriers of sickle cell, you can opt for artificial fertilization (IVF) wherein only the embryos without sickle cell disease to be placed in the uterus. Another possibility is to be with donor sperm or donor egg from someone who is not a carrier of sickle cell pregnant.
If you are pregnant, then you can use CVS (from 11 weeks) or amniocentesis (16 weeks) to determine whether the unborn child has sickle cell disease. You can then decide to abortion or finally decide to keep the baby.
Family members can also be carriers of sickle cell. A father, mother, brothers, sisters and children of a carrier of sickle cell each have a 50% chance (1 in 2) to also be of sickle cell carriers. If you are a carrier, it is recommended that other family members, who may want children in the future, get tested. Deserves

In the Netherlands, all newborn babies are tested on the (severe) with sickle cell disease called heel prick for several years.
In Belgium it is not (yet) the case. It is recommended to do when a blood test for sickle cell disease:
